Getting started

Requirements and planning

Prepare the Windows host, Microsoft 365 tenant, sender mailbox, private network, and SMTP devices required for RelayBridge v1.0.0-rc.1.

v1.0.0-rc.1 ยท PreviewUnsigned public release candidate for evaluation and community testing. A signed stable release is not yet available.Release status

Confirm that RelayBridge fits the deployment

RelayBridge is intended for printers, MFPs, scanners, NAS devices, monitoring systems, and legacy applications that can submit basic SMTP but cannot perform modern Microsoft 365 OAuth themselves.

Use it when a continuously available Windows client can sit on the trusted device network, one real Exchange Online mailbox can be authorized as the sender, and every device can be restricted by source address and SMTP envelope sender.

Not a fit for every environment

RC1 is not suitable when the device-facing hop must use TLS, the listener would be Internet-facing, remote management is required, multiple tenants or authorized senders are required, or policy requires a signed stable production release.

RC1 requirements

AreaRequirement
Operating systemWindows 10 or Windows 11 x64
InstallationA local administrator on the RelayBridge machine
Microsoft setupOne locally interactive administrator with tenant access capable of Entra application and Exchange RBAC setup
Internet accessRequired during installation for exact Graph/Entra package acquisition and any missing prerequisites
SenderOne real Exchange Online mailbox selected for RelayBridge
NetworkA trusted private LAN between devices and RelayBridge, plus required outbound DNS, HTTPS, and TCP 587
DeviceAn SMTP client with a fixed source address or narrow subnet and a controllable envelope sender; SMTP AUTH is preferred
BrowserThe default browser on the local RelayBridge machine

RC1 does not claim support for Windows Server, Server Core, x86, Arm64, RDP-based native setup, or simultaneous setup users.

Plan before installation

  1. Select the Windows host.Use a Windows 10 or 11 x64 machine that can run continuously on the intended private device network.
  2. Choose the private interface.Identify the exact private address printers will reach. Do not plan a wildcard, public, or Internet-facing listener.
  3. Select one sender mailbox. The SMTP envelope sender must be a real Exchange Online mailbox that the administrator will authorize.
  4. Inventory devices.Record each source IP or narrow subnet, exact sender, SMTP AUTH LOGIN/PLAIN capability, and ability to use connection security None.
  5. Confirm outbound access.Permit the RelayBridge host to resolve Microsoft and GitHub endpoints and connect to Exchange Online on TCP 587 without disabling TLS validation.
  6. Accept the evaluation boundary.RC1 is an unsigned public pre-release. A signed stable release is not yet available.
